Metal Mobility in Afforested Sites of an Abandoned Zn-Pb Ore Mining Area

Abstract: Heaps of waste material constitute a serious environmental problem in regions where the historical exploitation and processing of metal ores has taken place. The presented paper describes the trace metal distribution in selected heaps in the lead-zinc mining area of an abandoned mine in Poland, as well as the soil horizons beneath. The study aims at the estimation of the metal remobilization rate in vertical profiles in the spontaneously afforested area in the context of the potential danger it poses to the lo… Show more

“…This is a famous mining area in Buyeo-gun and near the city of Chungyang-gun, and Cd and Zn can be judged to be contaminated by mining. In fact, many papers have confirmed that Cd and Zn, as well as Pb and Cu, are the main causes of soil contamination by mines [110][111][112]. In addition, there is a survey result that this area is a concentrated area of many abandoned mines such as coal, metal, and minerals [113].…”

“…and Pleurosium sp. Several studies worldwide have compared the accumulation abilities of mosses and lichens and found that epiphytic lichens are primarily used as bio-monitors for qualitative indication as well as for the spatial and quantitative assessment of atmospheric metal contamination [26][27][28]. Bargagli et al [29] compared the advantages and disadvantages of using mosses and lichens.…”

“…Aleksander-Kwaterczak and Ciszewski [14] have studied the variation of heavy metal levels in soil profiles within a waste heap of a Zn-Pb mine decommissioned more than 200 years ago. The study objective was to determine the intensity of the vertical migration of heavy metals in soil profiles.…”
