“…Diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) and diffusive equilibrium in thin-films (DET) are methods of measuring fine-scale (cm to mm) solute concentrations in surface waters and sediment pore waters (Davison and Zhang, 2016). They have been used to quantify contaminant concentrations and biogeochemical processes in a variety of environments, including lacustrine (Ma et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 1995), estuarine (Cánovas et al, 2020), marine (Parker et al, 2017), and freshwater sediments (Byrne et al, 2015). Typically, DET devices are used to measure equilibrium surface water and sediment pore water concentrations by allowing solutes to diffuse through a membrane layer (0.45 μm) into an inner hydrogel layer (usually 0.12 cm thick).…”

“…The high concentrations of pollutants transported by both rivers have a severe environmental impact on the estuary, where most of the pollutants precipitate when the acid waters are neutralized by mixing with alkaline seawater. High concentrations of metal(loid)s such as As, Cd, and Pb have been measured in the estuarine waters, sediments, and biota [18][19][20][21]. Nevertheless, some of the most conservative metals under circumneutral pH conditions, such as Zn, Cd, and Mn, reach the Atlantic Ocean or even the Mediterranean Sea [22,23].…”
