Metal Surface Defect Detection Method Based on TE01 Mode Microwave

Abstract: With the aim of addressing the difficulty of detecting metal surface cracks and corrosion defects in complex environments, we propose a detection method for metal surface cracks and corrosion defects based on TE01-mode microwave. The microwave detection equations of cracks and corrosion defects were established by the Maxwell equations when the TE01 mode was excited by microwaves, and the relationship model between the defect size and the microwave characteristic quantity was established. A finite integral sim… Show more

“…In the recent, the intelligent manufacturing technology was pointed out [1][2][3][4][5] to motivate the steel industry has launched several initiatives to enhance the efficiency and the quality of production, and reduce the manual labor intensity. Besides, due to the related industry 4.0 development strategies have been promoted overall the world, [6][7][8][9] the rise and application of automatic equipment were further introduced into the steel industry.…”

“…The detection accuracy is higher than peak-to-peak detection with better reliability [8]. Shi et al proposed a method for detecting cracks and corrosion defects on metal surfaces based on TE01 mode microwaves to analyze the effects of defects on the microwave electric field, magnetic field, tube wall current, and return loss at the defects in the rectangular waveguide [9].…”

“…For instance, as a pillar of the national economy, it provides fundamental materials for contemporary building, transportation, bridges, vehicles, ships, household appliances, electric power, marine engineering, and other aspects in our daily life [ 2 ]. Simultaneously, the steel industry is dealing with considerable carbon dioxide emissions, poor working conditions, environmental pollution, safety difficulties generated by high temperatures and poisonous gases, high labor intensity for employees, and repetitive labor [ 3 ]. To address the aforementioned issues, large-scale steel firms have engaged in automation, information transformation, and upgrading during the last several decades, which has had a major driving influence on the steel industry’s production efficiency and automation level [ 4 ].…”
