Octahedral and roughly spherical In-In 2 O 3 nanoparticles ranging in average particle size from 30 up to 300 nm were prepared by levitation-jet aerosol synthesis through condensation of metal indium vapor in helium gas flow with gaseous oxygen/air injection at ambient and reduced pressure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET measurements, UV-vis, FT-IR, Raman, XPS, and vibratingsample magnetometry (VSM) characterized the nanoparticles. Room-temperature ferromagnetism with maximum magnetization of up to 0.17 emu/g was recorded for the nanoparticles. The results indicate a predominant role of the actual microstructure on the nanoparticle properties. It is suggested that the observed ferromagnetic ordering may be related to intrinsic defects at the In/In 2 O 3 interface structure of such a composite material. This suggestion is in good agreement with the results of optical and XPS experiments on the NPs.

The electrochemical behavior and electrodeposition of indium in an electrolyte composed of 0.1 mol/L InCl3 in 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([Py1,4]TFSI) on a gold electrode were investigated. The cyclic voltammogram revealed several reduction and oxidation peaks, indicating a complex electrochemical behavior. In the cathodic regime, with the formation of an In-Au alloy, the reduction of In(III) to In(I) and of In(I) to In(0) takes place. In situ electrochemical X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to investigate the reduction process by monitoring the oxidation states of the components during the cathodic polarization of 0.1 mol/L InCl3/[Py1,4]TFSI on a gold working electrode under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. The core electron binding energies of the IL components (C 1s, O 1s, F 1s, N 1s, and S 2p) shift almost linearly to more negative values as a function of the applied cell voltage. At −2.0 V versus Pt-quasi reference, In(I) was identified as the intermediate species during the reduction process. In the anodic regime, a strong increase in the pressure in the XPS chamber was recorded at a cell voltage of more than −0.5 V versus Pt quasi reference, which indicated, in addition to the oxidation reactions of In species, that the oxidation of Cl− occurs. Ex situ XPS and XRD results revealed the formation of metallic In and of an In-Au alloy.

Formation of PdIn intermetallic nanoparticles supported on α-Al2O3 was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and hydrogen temperature-programmed desorption (H2-TPD) methods. The metals were loaded as heterobimetallic Pd(μ-O2CMe)4In(O2CMe) complex to ensure intimate contact between Pd and In. Reduction in H2 at 200 °C resulted in Pd-rich PdIn alloy as evidenced by XRD and the disappearance of Pd hydride. A minor amount of Pd1In1 intermetallic phase appeared after reduction at 200 °C and its formation was accomplished at 400 °C. Neither monometallic Pd or in nor other intermetallic structures were found after reduction at 400–600 °C. Catalytic performance of Pd1In1/α-Al2O3 was studied in the selective liquid-phase diphenylacetylene (DPA) hydrogenation. It was found that the reaction rate of undesired alkene hydrogenation is strongly reduced on Pd1In1 nanoparticles enabling effective kinetic control of the hydrogenation, and the catalyst demonstrated excellent selectivity to alkene.
