Metallophthalocyanines with rod-shaped substituents

Abstract: 4-(4¢-Dioctylaminocarbonylbiphenyloxy) phthalonitrile was synthesized from 4-(4¢-carboxybiphenyloxy)phthalonitrile and dioctylamine in the presence of Et 3 N. Metallophthalocyanines (Zn, Co and Cu) substituted with four dioctylaminocarbonyl biphenyloxy groups on the peripheral positions were prepared from 4-(4¢-dioctylaminocarbonylbiphenyloxy)phthalonitrile and the corresponding divalent metal salts (Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 , CoCl 2 and CuCl 2 ). The new phthalocyanines are soluble in common organic solvents. These com… Show more

“…An important property of phthalocyanines is a rather low solubility in organic solvents. Alkyl, alkoxy and alkylthio chains or bulky groups are bonded to peripheral and axial sites of phthalocyanines to strongly enhance their solubility [4–10]. Substitution with carboxy or amino groups results in water‐soluble products [11].…”

“…In the present work, we have investigated voltammetric, in situ spectroelectrochemical in situ electrocolorimetric and electrocatalytic responses of Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) phthalocyanines bearing four dioctylaminocarbonyl biphenyloxy groups [21] in solution to open a way to their possible technological application depending on the spectroelectrochemical and chromaticity data. Since certain potential applications (e.g., in the design of an efficient catalyst and electrochromic devices) of these type complexes will require an understanding of the nature of their redox processes.…”
