Metamaterial CRLH Antennas on Silicon Substrate for Millimeter-Wave Integrated Circuits

Abstract: The paper presents two composite right/left-handed (CRLH) coplanar waveguide (CPW) zeroth-order resonant (ZOR) antennas which were designed, processed, and electrically characterized for applications in the millimetric wave frequency range. Two CRLH antennas were developed forf=27 GHz andf=38.5, GHz, respectively. The CRLH antenna onf=27 GHz shows a return loss ofRL<−18.78 dB atf=26.88 GHz. The −3 dB radiation characteristic beamwidth was approximately 37° and the gain wasGi=2.82 dBi. The CRLH antenna onf=3… Show more

“…Again, the triple band of frequencies obtained by implementing two structures such as U-shaped, meandering lines as the defected structures with partial ground and line feed patch with the reduced size [86]. Many techniques is proved to minimize the size and for multiband operation with good experiment results with the previous current researchers [87][88][89][90][91].…”

“…Over the past few years, in order to improve the gain, directivity, and radiation efficiency, while overcoming the limitations of silicon substrates and maintaining reduced size, different types of metamaterials have been proposed, such as Artificial Magnetic Conductors, AMC; High Impedance Surfaces, HIS; Electromagnetic Band-Gap structures, EBG; Double Negative Materials, DNG; Zeroth Order Resonators, ZOR; and various types of metasurfaces 13 – 20 . In other works, external resonators 21 , or lenses are used 22 , 23 , micromachining is performed around and below the antenna 24 , the doping profile around the antenna is tailored 12 , its position is optimized 25 , reflectors are employed 26 , and high resistivity (HR) substrates are used 27 , 28 .…”

“…In this paper, we proposed a compact two-section halfwave balun at 900 MHz, which was designed with artificial transmission lines. In recent years, artificial transmission lines [6] have been proposed, and some microwave components with artificial transmission lines have been realized, such as branch-line couplers [7], power dividers [8], and antennas [9,10]. We proposed modified artificial transmission lines to realize the transmission lines with low characteristic impedance.…”
