Metaphyseal osteopathy in a British Shorthair cat

Abstract: Metaphyseal osteopathy, otherwise known as hypertrophic osteodystrophy, is a disease that causes pyrexia and lethargy accompanied by pain in the thoracic and pelvic limbs of rapidly growing large-breed dogs. While metaphyseal osteopathy has been descibed in association with slipped capital femoral epiphysis in cats, it has not previously been reported as a cause of limb pain and pyrexia in this species. “…Treatment consists of supportive care that includes administration of intravenous fluids, nutritional assistance, analgesics, corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics in dogs with bacteraemia (3,(11)(12)(13). The first case report of metaphyseal osteopathy in a British Shorthair cat was recently described (14). The aim of this report was to describe the clinical features, radiographic lesions, medical treatment, and outcome in two Domestic Shorthair sibling kittens with a growth plate disturbance that resembled the metaphyseal osteopathy reported in dogs and in the British Shorthair cat.…”

“…Nutritional, infectious, vaccine-associated, and congenital causes have been implicated in the development of this disease; however, the exact pathogenesis remains unknown [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. The disease has been well documented in domestic canines (Canis lupus familiaris), and there have also been reports of the disease in domestic cats (Felis domesticus) and Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) [10][11][12].…”
