Metastability ofPbn2+clusters: Role of correlation effects

Abstract: The stability of Pb"^~^ clusters is studied by solving exactly for the valence 6p electrons a realistic many-body Hamiltonian with intra-atomic and interatomic Coulomb interactions. We obtain that Pbs^"^ has a metastable ground state and isosceles shape (bond angle 0-124°). The energy barrier against dissociation £"5 =0.13 eV yields a very long lifetime.
