Metastases to level IIb in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Level IIb nodal metastases are relatively uncommon in previously untreated SCC of the oral cavity (6%). Furthermore, isolated level IIb nodal disease is uncommon. However, given the quality of evidence to date, it is recommended that dissection of level IIb remain the standard of care in oral cavity squamous cell cancer.

“…In the light of the current literature, the management of level IV is not clear in clinically N0 oral cavity cancer; further prospective and multi-center studies are needed. Studies have shown that metastases to level IIB from oral cavity cancers are rare, occuring at a mean rate of 6% (Paleri, 2008, Lea, 2010. It has been demonstrated that isolated level IIB metastases from oral cavity cancers are exteremely rare (Lea, 2010).…”

It has been demonstrated that isolated level IIB metastases from oral cavity cancers are exteremely rare (Lea, 2010). But, when other levels, especially level IIA, contain occult metastases, level IIB metastases may occur in up to 22% of the patients (Elsheikh, 2005, Lea, 2010.…”

“…Since cancer metastasis decreases the patient survival rates, regional lymph node metastasis (RLNM) is one of the most adverse prognostic factors (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12) for almost all cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Therefore, elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in cancer metastasis clearly is needed to improve the prognosis (6,13).…”
