Metastatic congenital neuroblastoma associated with in situ neuroblastoma: case report and review of literature

Abstract: Although neonatal tumors are rare, neuroblastoma is the most common neoplasia among them. These tumors, which usually involve children in early infancy, are derived from neural crest cells of adrenal gland medulla or sympathetic ganglia. Even though congenital metastatic neuroblastoma presents a favorable prognosis, it may lead to death if not recognized and treated early on. The authors report the case of a 2-month-old child who was born from in vitro fertilization, and whose diagnosis was made after birth. T… Show more

“…Cancer in newborns is rare, with an estimated incidence of 3.65/100.000 live births and NBL is the most common type of malignant tumor in neonates accounting about 1.75/100.000 of cases [21]. NBL is a poorly differentiated neoplasm derived from neural crest ectoderm [22]. Bilateral involvement of adrenal glands has been noted in less than 10% of cases with NBL and may occur either by synchronous development or metastatic spread of the tumor [23].…”

“…Metastasis is the crucial property of cancer cells, and ~70% of patients with NB are supposed to have metastasized tumor at the time of diagnosis (Costa et al, ; Papaioannou, ). Accumulating evidence have suggested the probable functions of piRNA in controlling of metastatic properties of cancer cells (Liu, Zhang, & Cheng, ; Shen et al, ).…”

“…En 1863, Virchow describió por primera vez el neuroblastoma, un tumor derivado de las células de la cresta neural de la médula de la glándula suprarrenal o de los ganglios simpáticos 2,5 . La edad promedio al diagnóstico es de 21 meses a 2 años 1,5 . En México, en 2009 se registraron 2252 casos de cáncer pediátrico, Bol Med Hosp Infant Mex.…”
