Metathesis of Ethylene and Trans-2-Butene over MgO Admixed WO3/SiO2 Catalysts

Abstract: Abstract. The performances of MgO admixed WO3/SiO2 catalysts were investigated in the cross metathesis of ethylene and 2-butene to propylene at 450 o C atmospheric pressure. Compared to the WO3/SiO2 + silica gel, the conversion of 2-butene and the propylene selectivity were much higher on all the WO3/SiO2 + MgO catalysts. An increased propylene yield corresponded to the decrease in 1-butene and cis-2-butene by products. The results in this study also suggest suitable method to prepare highly stable MgO catalys… Show more

“…Owing to the continuously increasing demand for propene and incapacity of oil-based cracking processes to fulfill this request, on-purpose methods for the production of this olefin have attracted great attention in recent years. , The metathesis of ethylene with 2-butene into propene is one of such large-scale technologies . The applied WO x /SiO 2 catalytic system is characterized by low price, long lifetime, and resistance to poisoning gas-phase impurities, but shows industrially relevant activity at relatively high temperatures (∼350–450 °C). Supported Mo-containing catalysts are active at moderate temperatures (25–200 °C) and are considered as promising alternatives to the commercial system. , The main focus of studies dealing with such materials is placed on the understanding of factors affecting their activity, selectivity, and on-stream stability.…”

“…Typical heterogeneous catalysts include oxides of Re, W, or Mo supported on SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , or SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 [2]. WO x / SiO 2 applied on the large scale is characterized by low price, long lifetime, and resistance to poisoning [3][4][5]. WO x -based catalysts are, however, active at relatively high temperatures (∼350-450 °C), while MoO x -or ReO x -based catalysts demonstrate high activity at lower temperatures (25-200 °C) [2,6].…”
