In today's Technology Age, where communication technologies are gaining momentum, social, cultural, and technological competencies draw attention from individual and societal perspectives. Along with technological innovations, transformations are experienced in the societal development process in many areas, including education, communication, language, culture, economy, etc. In this context, innovative technologies in today's science and technology-oriented society bring applications of artificial intelligence and the virtual universe, exploring the interaction between humans and space and beyond. Metaverse stands out as a structure among these virtual universe applications. Metaverse, one of the popular artificial intelligence applications of recent times, emphasizes creating a virtual social environment beyond time with the understanding of space and beyond. Metaverse is a permanent three-dimensional world where many situations that we cannot experience in the real world can be experienced and where communication can be established with other people or virtual people. It is thought that it may be beneficial to support a course such as social studies, which includes many disciplines and aims to raise well-equipped citizens with technology. The social studies course is also noteworthy as an area focusing on developing digital competence and skills. In this direction, this research aims to reveal the awareness levels of pre-service social studies teachers about metaverse usage from various variables. The experimental scanning method from quantitative research methods was utilized during the research process. According to the results of the study, while the awareness of the pre-service teachers about the application of metaverse as a current, popular technology and communication source is not found to be significant in terms of variables such as gender, age, and class level, it is significant regarding the university they attend, frequency of internet use, thoughts about using the internet/technology in education, digital environment and metaverse themed education, certificate program, and participation in courses.

With the rapid growth of the Internet, human daily life has become deeply bound to the Internet. To take advantage of massive amounts of data and information on the internet, the Web architecture is continuously being reinvented and upgraded. From the static informative characteristics of Web 1.0 to the dynamic interactive features of Web 2.0, scholars and engineers have worked hard to make the internet world more open, inclusive, and equal. Indeed, the next generation of Web evolution (i.e., Web 3.0) is already coming and shaping our lives. Web 3.0 is a decentralized Web architecture that is more intelligent and safer than before. The risks and ruin posed by monopolists or criminals will be greatly reduced by a complete reconstruction of the Internet and IT infrastructure. In a word, Web 3.0 is capable of addressing web data ownership according to distributed technology. It will optimize the internet world from the perspectives of economy, culture, and technology. Then it promotes novel content production methods, organizational structures, and economic forms. However, Web 3.0 is not mature and is now being disputed. Herein, this paper presents a comprehensive survey of Web 3.0, with a focus on current technologies, challenges, opportunities, and outlook. This article first introduces a brief overview of the history of World Wide Web as well as several differences among Web 1.0, Web 2.0, Web 3.0, and Web3. Then, some technical implementations of Web 3.0 are illustrated in detail. We discuss the revolution and benefits that Web 3.0 brings. Metaverse is going to change human life in a profound way because it offers an opportunity to merge our physical world with the digital/virtual worlds. Yet, how much effort has the research community across the world and disciplines contributed and what are the emerging themes of metaverse? The study aims to answer these important research questions using a bibliometric approach. Using a search of (“metaverse” OR “metaverses”) in “Article Title, Abstract, Keywords” and the date range up to 2022 on March 15, 2023 in Scopus, 1031 journal articles, reviews, and conference papers were identified. Among the 1031 identified documents, 816 (i.e., around 80%) were published in 2022. Feiyue Wang of the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences was found to be the most productive author with 17 metaverse publications, followed by Elif Ayiter of Sabancı Üniversitesi with 11 metaverse publications. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (with its Institute of Automation) was found to be the most productive affiliation with 29 publications. China, the United States, South Korea, and the United Kingdom were the most productive countries that contributed to over 58% of metaverse publications. Co‐occurrence of keywords analysis revealed that seven clusters were emerged. The clusters included “artificial intelligence and human perception,” “metaverses and blockchain,” “e‐learning and students,” “metaverse, avatar and immersive,” “virtual reality, virtual worlds, and Second Life,” “three dimensional computer graphics and deep learning,” and “augmented reality, mixed reality, and human computer interaction.” Implications and future directions are given.
