Meteorological and Hydrological Drought Risk Assessment Using Multi-Dimensional Copulas in the Wadi Ouahrane Basin in Algeria

Abstract: A persistent precipitation deficiency (meteorological drought) could spread to surface water bodies and produce a hydrological drought. Meteorological and hydrological droughts are thus closely related, even though they are separated by a time lag. For this reason, it is paramount for water resource planning and for drought risk analysis to study the connection between these two types of drought. With this aim, in this study, both meteorological and hydrological drought were analyzed in the Wadi Ouahrane Basin… Show more

“…However, most of these research have not focused on using satellite remote sensing to map the geographical and temporal patterns of meteorological drought hazards in Gamo Zone with limited station coverage. Due to the scarcity of rainfall stations in the study area, drought distribution and temporary distribution were not effectively represented [47,48]. Satellite remote sensing data can help monitor the atmosphere by detecting changes in Earth's vegetation, quality of atmospheric trace gas, sea state, ocean color, and ice fields [49][50][51].…”

“…While meteorological factors constitute the source of the foundational risk of drought disasters in Guizhou Province [51], the evolution of droughts is significantly influenced by regional water resources. Among the various river basins in Guizhou, the Wujiang River Basin covers the largest area, with abundant water resources [52].…”

“…A catchment-based hydrological drought analysis is used. It is measured in streamflow and pools, lakes, and underground water levels, among other places [45]. Hydrological measurements are not the first signs of drought because of a lag between a shortage of rainfall and a deficit in river water, lakes, and dams.…”
