Methanol induced stroke: report of cases occurring simultaneously in two biological brothers

Abstract: Methanol bears semblance to ethanol in smell and taste, thus, individuals who indulge in alcohol may fall back on it in societies where alcohol consumption is illegal or difficult to come by despite the life-threatening neurologic sequelae of methanol toxicity. Stroke is an uncommon outcome of methanol poisoning. We presented two cases of methanol-induced infarctive and hemorrhagic stroke in biological brothers who were simultaneously involved in an illicit ingestion of methanol. One of them developed infarcti… Show more

“…It is in a later stage of the disease, after several days, that macro hemorrhages occur in the infarcted areas, with a clear predominant involvement of the putamen. [58][59][60] Toxic and Radiation-Induced ICH Cocaine is well documented as being associated with neurovascular complications such as hemorrhagic (ICH, SAH, intraventricular hemorrhage) and ischemic strokes. 61,62 The risk of hemorrhagic events (ICH, SAH) after cocaine use is correlated with metabolite concentrations in the serum.…”

“…A literature search of methanol toxicity cases in Saudi Arabia (SA) revealed only four cases ( Algahtani et al, 2018 ; Althwanay et al, 2020 ; Owolabi et al, 2020 ). However, Galvez-Ruiz et al described outcomes of optic disk cupping following methanol poisoning in a series of 50 cases presenting at two large hospitals in Riyadh between 2008 and 2014, possibly indicating a higher incidence of methanol toxicity than perceived ( Galvez-Ruiz et al, 2015 ).…”
