Method for Judging the Stability of Asphaltenes in Crude Oil

Abstract: The colloidal instability index (CII) has been widely used for testing the stability of asphaltenes as a classical method. In this study, five oil samples were tested by the CII method; the results obtained greatly differ from the real field results. In our investigation, we combined the Turbiscan LAB stability analyzer and saturate, aromatic, resin, and asphaltene (SARA) analysis to further investigate the asphaltene stability by heptane titration. The results revealed that there exists a threshold volume rat… Show more

“…This suggests that the higher saturate content SRVRs would demonstrate a lower conversion level in the commercial ebullated-bed hydrocracker, based on the established negative statistically meaningful relation to the VR CII. 53 The higher influence of the saturate content on the oil colloidal instability is also supported by the finding of Xiong et al 82 that light oils are more susceptible to cause asphaltene deposition than heavy oils.…”

“…Due to the complexity of the peptization, flocculation, and precipitation of asphaltene phenomena, several attempts of alternatives or modified methodologies for the measurement of crude oil stability have been reported. …”

“…Several attempts were performed and reported the characterization of the asphaltenes fraction. [69][70][71] Results of the characterization described asphaltenes either as complex macromolecules or as a colloidal suspension stabilized by resin molecules. It is well known that the asphaltenes component rapidly precipitates in the presence of shear (turbulent flow), as well as acidic compounds, carbon dioxide solution, decreased pressure that could alter the stability of asphaltenes dispersion.…”
