Method for measuring wear on boot outsoles using a 3D laser scanner

Abstract: In the mining industry, slips and falls are the second leading cause of non-fatal injuries. Footwear is the primary defence against a slip; consequently, the condition of the footwear outsole is critical to maintaining slip resistance. Currently, there is no published method that can be used to determine when the outsole no longer affords adequate slip protection. Moreover, quantifying the condition of the outsole through the measurement of outsole features can be tedious. This article introduces a new method … Show more

“…There is also no published data on how safety footwear is supplied to workers and protocols for when it is replaced in the wine industry. Recent research into shoe tread (sole) wear and wear measurement has highlighted the need for understanding the mechanism for shoe tread wear and individualised shoe replacement recommendations to prevent injury caused by the decline in traction of worn shoes [47][48][49].…”

“…Recent publications describe tools being developed for the advancement of insole pressure measurements for sports (Krüger & Edelmann-Nusser, 2009) and fall risk assessment (Subramaniam et al, 2022), as well as an outsole measurement tool for slip prevention (Whitson et al, 2018). Giles and Vallandingham (1991) discuss relationships between foot, footwear, and footprint measurements with regard to a persons' height but do not include footwear insole measurements or specific outsole measurement techniques.…”

“…The foot dimensions used in the study were measured from scanned digital foot models using virtual tools (PolyWorks Software, InnovMetric Software, Quebec, QC, Canada). PolyWorks allows precise measurements along the sagittal (x) and transverse (y) axes and realigned foot axis (Schwarz-Müller et al, 2021;Whitson et al, 2018). The foot axis is defined as the line joining the pternion (Pte, the most posteriorly projecting point of the heel) and the centre point (CP) of the vertical cross-section passing through the MT and MF (Lee & Wang, 2015).…”
