Method of Black Liquor Combustion to Remove Silicon from Wheat Straw Pulping

Abstract: The effects of aluminium sulphate and sodium aluminate on physical and chemical properties of wheat straw pulp black liquor were studied. Results showed that the expansion rate was enhanced by increasing the aluminum salt content; furthermore, the effect of sodium aluminate was better than that of aluminum sulfate. The maximum desilication rate of 92.31% was reached with the addition of 3% sodium aluminate. A rheometer showed that aluminum salt had little impact on the viscosity of thick black liquor, so even … Show more

“…The precipitation may be minerals with complex structures such as Na2Al2Si2O8 and Mg6Si4O10(OH)8. This hypothesis has been validated by the authors' previous studies (Xu et al (2015a,b, Xu et al 2017, which provides a theoretical foundation for the GL desilication in the combustion of BL by adding desilication agent before pumping into the alkali recovery furnace. “…20 °C in the peak point between the BL before and after filtration probably correlated with the existing magnitude of silica to a significant degree. Research by Miller et al (1989) and Xu et al (2015) shows that silica has a direct impact on the thermodynamic properties. Combining the peak points of the DTG curve in Fig.…”

“…Rice straw BL has the highest silica content among fiber materials commonly used in papermaking. Desilication of straw BL by means of acidification with stack gas and sulfuric acid (Xu et al 2015) is considered an effective method. It can help reduce and even eliminate silicon disturbance during chemical recovery of straw BL, but the increment in the solids concentration is limited, being within 3% to 5%.…”

“…However, growing environmental policy pressure has led to a decrease of the proportion of the straw used for clean pulping in recent years so that only about 20 million tons of agricultural residuals are being used to produce paper products, and rice and wheat pulp account for only 4% currently. The inherent disadvantages, high content of ash and silicon accompanied with parenchyma cells, 9 not only make the black liquor (BL) hard to extract and concentrate but also bring about the silicon disturbance in the recovery system. 10 As a result, the BL obtained from straw pulping is hard to apply in the traditional recovery system, which becomes the bottleneck for development of straw pulping.…”
