Method selection in adaptation research: the case of the Delta Programme for the Dutch Wadden region

Abstract: Many methods are available to support adaptation planning. Yet there is little guidance on their selection. A recently developed diagnostic framework offers a structured set of criteria to choose research methods for specific adaptation questions. It has been derived from science-driven cases mostly. This paper offers the first application to a policy-driven case. Thus, it aims to (1) assess the descriptive quality of the framework for adaptation planning and (2) reflect on its value in supporting method selec… Show more

“…A more detailed analysis of method selection can be found in van Slobbe et al (2014) and Werners et al (2015). This analysis was the basis for developing a structured methodology to choose research methods for specific adaptation questions (Hinkel and Bisaro 2014).…”

“…The DAF has been used successfully in the Netherlands and used in the adaptation policy planning by the Dutch Delta Programme in the Wadden Region. It compared the research methods used in the Delta Programme with those suggested by the diagnostic framework (Werners et al, 2015). Like the Netherlands the Coast of Guyana lies below sea level and is very vulnerable to the effects of climate change such as sea level rise.…”

“…Werners et al (2014) test the resulting diagnostic framework by comparing the research methods it suggests with methods Towards a diagnostic adaptation science 3 actually applied in the Dutch Delta Programme. Finally, Bisaro et al (2015) synthesises findings across all case studies in terms of the strengths and weaknesses of individual methods applied, as well as patterns of sequences of methods observed.…”
