Method Support of Information Requirements Analysis for Analytical Information Systems

Abstract: The development of analytical information systems differs from the development of transaction-oriented systems. Specific method support is particularly needed for requirements engineering. The paper at hand evaluates the state of the art in information requirements analysis and identifies areas for further research. From a practice perspective, a need for further research on information requirements elicitation, validation, and management can be identified. Furthermore, in order to ensure the ongoing elicitati… Show more

“…While this may be quite costly for a single use case, it is worth the effort in case of repeated applications for multiple groups of decision makers. As Stroh et al [5] point out, information requirements analysis is not a one-time project, but a continual process. The proposed formalization based on metadata is a first step in this direction since it enables the realization of meaningful automation potential.…”

“…Numerous approaches to information requirements analysis and various types of management support systems -most recently business intelligence (BI) systemshave been proposed to increase the clarity in corporate decision making [5]. Despite these efforts, decision makers still face information overload with negative consequences such as mental stress, loss of clarity, and reduced decision quality [1].…”

“…Based on existing information needs of the service technicians, information systems can be designed according to the necessity. Nevertheless, a purposeful design of such information systems requires a careful analysis and documentation of the particular information requirements [31]. Since current research in the academic discipline of Service Science, Management and Engineering tends to focus on the basis of creating value in service economics or on service marketing and the inclusion of the customer, little research on information needs in the field of TCS has been conducted to date [3].…”

“…The implication is that such a model would help to provide information more closely linked to the decision to be made. One problem associated with the integration of data in this way is the fact that the need for analytic information differs from the need for transactional information, and Information System professionals lack adequate models to clearly define analytic information needs (March and Hevner 2007;Stroh et al 2011).…”
