Methodological issues in the application of conjoint analysis in health care

Abstract: This paper adds to an increasing literature on methodological questions addressed in the application of conjoint analysis (CA) in health care. Three issues are addressed: ordering effects; internal validity; and internal consistency. The results of an application of CA in a primary care setting provide no evidence that the ordering of scenarios was important. Evidence was found of both internal validity and internal consistency. In addition, individual preferences were found to be determined by experiences, wh… Show more

“…This design allowed efficient estimation for the main effects of the seven dichotomous attributes with a minimum number of eight hypothetical vaccines, under the assumption that the impact of the factors are additive, that is, there are no interactions among the factors [38]. Although the additivity assumption creates restrictions, we believe it is appropriate to focus on the main effects for our study given its pioneering nature in assessing the acceptability of multi-attribute HIV vaccines.…”

“…One of those is called a discrete choice experiment (DCE), which identifies the wishes and preferences of a specific group of people. The willingness to pay (WTP) for (lifesaving) medical services can be calculated from a DCE, provided that costs are incorporated into that DCE 6 . Worldwide hardly any research has been performed to examine the attitude of the general public towards HEMS, including the marginal willingness to pay for lives saved by HEMS.…”
