Estimation and correct determination of vitrinite equivalent reflectance in rock is crucial for the assessment of the source rock in both conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon deposits. These parameters can be determined in laboratories on rock samples. Laboratory measurements provide only point information. However, the use of well logs could overcome discontinuities in the data and provide parameters throughout a study interval. Attention has been paid to the estimation of TOC based on well logs. Vitrinite equivalent reflectance estimation is less well discussed and most papers reported cases with high TOC content in analyzed deposits. In this paper, the estimation of improved Ro is presented using a calculated maturity indicator with well logs. As the organic matter content is not high, additional steps were required for the calculation. To improve the quality of the fit and to find similar intervals, the data were grouped using cluster and neural network analysis. The next step was to use the resistivity log to improve the obtained maturity indicator. Due to the changing properties of kerogen with the type and degree of thermal maturity, this approach turned out to be reliable. The use of resistivity significantly increased the correlation coefficient and reduced errors. The method was tested on two wells with different type and maturity of kerogen. The obtained results are satisfactory, which makes it possible to use the method even in formations with a low organic matter content.

The aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) has gained attention in several countries as an installation for increasing the energy efficiency of geothermal systems and the use of waste heat. The Lower Cretaceous reservoir is known as one of the most prospective for geothermal purposes in Poland. However, in the southern part of the Mogilno–Łódź Trough (Central Poland) is considered to have a lower geothermal potential. The aim of this paper is to study whether the Lower Cretaceous reservoir in this area is suitable for aquifer thermal energy storage. Prior to dynamic simulations in Feflow© software, a regional Petrel© static parametric model which includes a multidisciplinary approach was prepared. A methodology of fitting Petrel’s structural and parametrical model to Feflow requirements is provided within this paper. The performance simulation of 4 systems has been conducted for 30 years. Increasing precipitation potential is expected for aragonite and calcite along with a temperature increase, while silica precipitation carries a much smaller risk. The paper presents potential for ATES systems in the Lower Cretaceous reservoir of the study area with the best doublet location having thermal recovery ratio of 0.47 and 0.34 for 30 and 40 K temperature differential scenario. An imbalance in heat injection/production in the storage system can cause the reservoir to cool faster than in conventional geothermal heating installation. ATES can provide a successful geothermal reservoir boosting in the case of applying a balanced injection of waste heat.

This anal y sis showed that the ver ti cal changes in tem per a ture and ther mal gra di ent have a non-lin ear char ac ter with no reg u lar pat tern in the dis tri bu tion of the pa ram e ters mod elled, so a 3D mod el ing ap proach was cho sen as the most ap pro pri ate method for their quan ti ta tive de scrip tion. Fur ther more, stan dard iza tion of the ther mal logs was rec og nized as man da tory so the in flu ence of drill ing pro cess would be elim i nated. Among a broad ar ray of meth ods and their pre con di tions dis cussed, the Kukkonen-Szewczyk method was se lected for the data col lected in the study area. Mod el ing re sults show a close re la tionship be tween ther mal gra di ent, li thol ogy and petrophysical rock prop er ties as well as a cor re la tion be tween the dis tri bu tion of pos i tive ther mal anom a lies and yield of hy dro car bon ac cu mu la tions within the Carpathian Foredeep. The ac cu racy of the model has been as sessed as ~10%. The model was then used for dis cus sion of hy dro car bon gen er a tion and pre dic tion of for ma tion tem per a ture.
