Methodology for Eddy Current Losses Calculation in Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs)

Abstract: Linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) is a commonly used linear displacement sensor because of its good measurement characteristics. When using laminated ferromagnetic cores in LVDTs, it is very important to take eddy currents into the account during design phase of the sensor. Particularity of the open-type core means that the eddy currents induced by the stray magnetic flux that flow in large loops tangential to the lamination surfaces take on significant values. Due to the open-type core a typical… Show more

“…These losses occur as a result of the alternating magnetic flux in the core. Their sources are magnetic hysteresis [14][15][16][17] and eddy currents [18,19]. Hysteresis losses are proportional to the surface area of the magnetic hysteresis loop in the transformer core.…”

“…Recent advances in research focuses on various aspects of stray losses within transformer tanks. These studies employ a variety of methodologies, including numerical techniques such as the finite element method, as well as analytical and experimental approaches [1][2][3][4][5][6]. In this work, stray magnetic field refers to the dispersion magnetic field that reaches the tank and core clamp, and that produces stray losses in them.…”

“…The calculation of eddy current losses in LVDTs is addressed in [11]. The authors introduce a new methodology to tackle this problem, particularly for LVDTs with an opentype core, with the aim of improving the design to obtain greater measurement accuracy.…”
