Methodology of the Modular ECG Analysis System MEANS

Abstract: The methodology, used in the Modular ECG Analysis System (MEANS) is described. MEANS consists of modules for signal analysis and diagnostic classification. The basic structure of the modular interpretation system remained intact over a period of 20 years, while all modules underwent many changes as a function of experience and insight, and the continuously changing information technology. The article describes the advantages of a modular approach to decision-support systems, the most important ones being easie… Show more

“…The operation of the waveform recognition algorithms has been described and validated extensively. 20,21 MEANS determines common QRS onset and offset and T offset for all 12 leads together on 1 representative averaged beat by use of template matching techniques. 22 For QTD measurement, the location of the overall end of T is taken as a starting point.…”

“…The ECGs were processed by our Modular ECG Analysis System (MEANS), an ECG computer program that has been evaluated extensively (van Bemmel et al, 1990; Willems et al, 1991). MEANS signals excessive noise and baseline wander, recognizes ectopic beats and the various forms of AV block.…”

“…Standard 12-lead supine digital resting ECGs were recorded in FD patients and control subjects (GE MAC5500, 500 samples/s). The obtained ECGs were processed with the Modular ECG Analysis System (MEANS) program, which determines P-wave, QRS and T-wave onsets and offsets for all 12 leads together on one representative averaged beat [27]. All on-and offsets were manually checked and adjusted when needed.…”
