Methods— A Simple Method to Measure In-Plane Electrical Resistance of PEM Fuel Cell and Electrolyzer Catalyst Layers

Abstract: Optimizing the catalyst layer of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and water electrolyzers requires a good understanding of its properties. The in-plane electrical resistance of the catalyst layer is a key property, which impacts the overall cell performance. In this work, we present a simple method to measure the in-plane electrical resistance of catalyst layers under various conditions based on the transfer length method. The applicability of the method was demonstrated on four examples: 1) Placing the… Show more

“…The reason for this is that R catalyst is characteristic of the catalyst. 18 For electrode activity, only R solution needs to be compensated, because R contact needs to be addressed by the electrode design other than being "compensated". 19 An excellent example is shown in the analysis of IrO x conductivity on a porous substrate for water electrolysis by Gasteiger et al 20 For industrial activity evaluation, no iR compensation should be performed.…”

“…However, only R contact + R solution should be used as R u when studying sample activity. The reason for this is that R catalyst is characteristic of the catalyst .
