Methods and synthesis parameters affecting the formation of FAU type zeolite membrane and its separation performance: a review

Abstract: The development of Faujasite (FAU) zeolite membranes has been a subject of interest for various application due to the uniform pore's characteristic, excellent thermal, and chemical stability as well as catalytic and ion-exchange properties of FAU zeolite membranes. However, the synthesis of FAU zeolite membranes with minimum defects is still challenging as there are multiple variables in the synthesis process which need to be controlled. This review started with an overview on zeolites, zeolite membranes, and… Show more

“…The second approach is to make zeolite membranes for sensors, substance separation, etc. [5][6][7] However, the process of preparing zeolite membranes is long and complicated, and the membranes usually have many cracks and holes. In addition, the mechanical properties of zeolite membranes are generally poor.…”

“…However, as selfsupporting zeolite membranes are typically prepared on a removable cellulose or Teflon support layer, they are fragile with no mechanical strength which make them unsuitable for industrial applications. 152 Supported zeolite membranes One of the main types of microporous inorganic membranes that offer both high permeability and high separation capability due to the potential of molecular sieving and uniform nanosize pores are zeolite membranes. 4 Supported zeolite membranes are the most commonly used and preferred type of zeolite membranes.…”

“…They have a zeolite microporous structure, which may contain a porous ceramic or metal support plus a thin and porous layer of zeolite on top that contains nanosize intercrystal pores. 96,152,153 From the first effort of preparing zeolite membranes in 1987 from granular zeolite, 154 they have been widely explored and studied due to their unique properties such as molecular sieving, catalytic and selective sorption, lower fouling probability, flexibility and adaptability. 5,53,93,100,152,155,156 Some of the widely used zeolite framework structures in separation membranes are FAU, LTA, MFI and MOR.…”

“…Such a separation could simplify the analysis and would also be of special interest. As reported, FAU-type zeolites include type X and Y [31][32][33]. X zeolites are commonly used for selective separation of small molecular (e.g., olefin/paraffin separation, CO 2 capture) in gas phase [34], or adsorptive removal of heavy metal in water [35].…”
