Methods used to determine maximum and minimum dry unit weights of sand: Is there a need for a new standard?

Abstract: Known challenges exist with maximum (γdmax) and minimum (γdmin) dry unit weight measurements; the respective dry unit weight results depend very much on the method or standard used. A laboratory testing programme was completed to systematically determine and compare γdmax and γdmin values derived for six different sand types by using different methods. The tested sands contained a wide variety of mineralogical and fines contents. The γdmax and γdmin determinations were performed according to the following meth… Show more

“…For measuring e min , ASTM and JGS procedures use the same moulds before mentioned but involve a vertical vibrating table and the application of horizontal blows, respectively. Since the applied energy per volume, e min values obtained from the JGS method yields slightly higher values than e min values obtained from the ASTM (Lunne et al, 2019). Non-significant differences resulted by using both standard procedures for e max and e min .…”

“…e max , respectively) were reported for this material by different researchers who participated in the LEAP project and beyond (Vasko 2015;Parra Bastidas 2016;Carey et al 2020). The variability of these parameters may be associated with the use of different laboratory methods for the determination of maximum and minimum densities, as well as with issues in the repeatability of each method (Lunne et al 2019). Given the impact of these parameters in the evaluation of D R , the values of e min and e max must be carefully selected.…”

“…The specific gravity of soil particles was determined by employing the pycnometric tests [46]. The maximum and minimum dry densities of sand were found by the vibratory table method and the rainfall technique [47,48]. The shear strength parameters of sand were found by direct shear test [49].…”
