“…Recently, the structural difference in these regions was found to be due to variation in the copy number of 132 base pair tandem repeats within the inverted repeats of the MDV1 genome (Maotani et al, 1986). We have demonstrated the presence of polyadenylated RNA that hybridizes with a DNA fragment containing the 132 bp tandem direct repeats in cells infected with MDV1 (see also Kanamori et al, 1987). This region including the tandem repeats did not have any detectable homology with the virus DNAs of serotypes 2 and 3, suggesting it could code for MDV 1-specific proteins .…”

“…The quiescent genomes of retroviruses, adenoviruses and herpesviruses in their respective latently infected cells have been shown to be heavily methylated at 5' CpG 3' residues (Desrosiers et al, 1979;Groudine et al, 1981;Hoffman et al, 1982;Kanamori et al, 1987;Minarovits et al, 1991). Moreover, inhibition of 5' CpGY methylation with 5-azacytidine has been associated with the reactivation of such latent genomes (Ben-Sasson & Klein, 1981;Groudine et al, 1981;Hoffman et al, 1982;Niwa & Sugahara, 1981).…”

“…Since latent herpesvirus genomes have been shown to possess methylation patterns distinct from genomes isolated from productively infected cells (Desrosiers et al, 1979;Kanamori et al, 1987;Youssoufian et al, 1982), we examined whether the MDV DNA in these tumour cell lines displayed this characteristic of latent viral genomes. Therefore, D N A was isolated and digested with the restriction enzymes MspI and HpaII (Fig.…”

“…This virus has long been regarded as a lymphotropic or gammaherpesvirus because of its association with lymphomas in chickens and as a result of extensive studies of cell lines derived from these lymphomas which have suggested parallels to EBV (Payne, 1982;Nonoyama, 1982). Thus, multiple copies of the virus genome are detectable in cell lines in which a minority of cells appear to be undergoing productive infection, virus genomes in some of these cell lines have apparently been shown to be episomal and to become methylated (Hirai et al, 1981 ;Kaschka-Dierich et al, 1979;Kanamori et al, 1987). However, recent studies of the genetic organization of MDV [and of its near relative the herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT)] have shown that the genomes of these viruses are grossly collinear with those of the alphaherpesviruses HSV and VZV (Buckmaster et al, 1988).…”
