Methylglyoxal destroys Agrobacterium tumefaciens crown gall tumours in Nicotiana tabacum without any adverse effect on the host plant

Abstract: Methylglyoxal (MG) is a highly reactive α-oxoaldehyde, demonstrating anticancer effect on plant neoplastic tumours. In in vivo studies it was observed that MG destroyed crown gall tumours in Nicotiana tabacum produced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, without any adverse effect on the host. The efficacy of MG in comparison to other anticancer drugs viz. cisplatin and ellagic acid in the treatment of crown gall was investigated. A slight degeneration of galls was noted in plants treated with cisplatin and ellagic a… Show more

“…The procedures described above as well as studies carried out in our laboratory earlier indicate a significant role of MG in the process of differentiation (Roy et al 2004, Ray et al 2011. These studies have shown that the Chl content of calluses increases with the concentration of MG from 0.1 to 0.25 mM MG and then begins to drop at 0.5 mM MG.…”

“…As a ketoaldehyde, MG exhibits strong anticancer and other diverse biological effects (Kalapos 2008, Talukdar et al 2008. Similar to its effect on animal systems, MG was found to destroy crown gall tumors completely in Nicotiana tabacum without any adverse effect on the host plant (Ray et al 2011).…”

“…6,7 On the other hand, MGX is also considered an inhibitor of cell growth, especially for rapidly proliferating cells, hence some authors considered it as a potent anticancer agent. 8,9 Nevertheless, there are not any clear studies correlating exogenous MGX uptake and endogenous intracellular AGE effects or any antineoplastic processes.…”
