Show more

“…Seeds were subjected to fast desiccation on activated silica gel (8% RH) and slow desiccation conditions in a laboratory environment (25 ± 2 °C and 35% RH) until they reached a water content of 40%, 30%, 20%, and 15%; seeds of H. speciosa do not tolerate desiccation below 15% water content (BARROS et al, 2006;SANTOS et al, 2010;MASETTO;SCALON, 2014).…”

“…Its fruits can be freshly consumed or used to make juices, ice cream, and jelly (SOUZA et al, 2007). However, populations of this species have been reduced due to unsustainable exploitation and deforestation of these regions (BARROS et al, 2006), which hinders its propagation primarily by seeds. The seeds of this species are sensitive to desiccation, which complicates its ex-situ conservation, i.e., in seed banks (MASETTO;SCALON, 2014).…”

“…Although the species presents many advantages that allow it to be used towards trade, the water content below 25% in their seeds may impair its germination in field, reducing the productivity of the species and decreasing the availability of products from 'mangabeira' (BARROS et al, 2006). The main causes of the low germination are related to the seeds recalcitrance which also hardens long-term storage, besides the presence of certain inhibitors able to perform the fermentation and produce phenolic compounds in fruit pulp (OLIVEIRA; VALIO, 1992;LORENZI, 2000;BARROS et al, 2006;SANTOS et al, 2010).…”
