Metrical variation in the thumb, index, and middle finger among four samples of both sexes

Abstract: Metrical length and width parameters of the first through third ray metacarpals and phalanges are presented for four samples of adults of both sexes drawn from radiographs of the Ten State Nutrition Survey (1968-1970). Radiographic measurements were obtained with the aid of a digitizer and computer translation program. The establishment of ranges of variation among these samples allows their use in clinical diagnosis, for example of syndromes via pattern profile analysis. Proportional analyses of hand metrics … Show more

“…Radiographic measurement technique for standard posterior-anterior hand radiographs has been described elsewhere (Smith, 1990(Smith, , 1991). Flat distal phalangeal I length for the volunteer sample is measured from the tip of the distal tuft to the proximal edge of the base, as are the lengths of distal phalanges I1 and 111, while in rotated (standard) views the proximal point of distal phalanx I is taken at the intersection with proximal phalanx I.…”

“…Variation among samples of modern humans has been addressed elsewhere (Smith, 1990(Smith, , 1991(Smith, , 1994. There is an extensive range of variation within modern humans, and this should be taken into consideration when attempting to draw functional or taxonomic conclusions from the fossil data.…”
