Mexican-American caregivers’ perceptions about asthma management: a photovoice study

Abstract: Results support the need for active partnerships between caregivers and providers. Photographs can serve as the basis for reciprocal education between patient and provider, especially in the area of environmental triggers. Provider visits should include assessment, strategies and resources to maximize IAQ. Photovoice facilitates caregivers' ability to advocate for improved asthma management and health equity.

“…Photovoice is a qualitative methodology grounded in participatory action research and has been used to study a range experiences from youth (Goodhart et al 2006;Necheles et al 2007;Davison et al 2011;Walton & Niblett 2013), youth and adults from culturally diverse and socially disadvantaged groups (Bukowski & Buetow 2011;Denov et al 2012) and the experiences of very young children (Pyle 2013). Specifically, the Photovoice Hamilton Manual and Resource Kit (Photovoice Hamilton, 2007) has been recommended for the purposes of photovoice, and has been used with parents of youth with complex care needs and with youth themselves (Postma et al 2014(Postma et al , 2015Woodgate et al 2015). Photography-based research methodologies have also been successfully used with persons with intellectual disabilities (Jurkowski 2008;Akkerman et al 2014).…”

“…6 Research also shows that caregivers of children with asthma who believe that exposure to secondhand smoke, dust, and other lung irritants can prompt breathing difficulties typically help their child avoid exposure to these ''triggers.'' 7,8 Finally, research shows that providing caregivers with personalized feedback about their child's risk of obesity prompts caregivers to engage in healthier feeding practices. 9,i What shapes proxy risk perceptions?…”

“…Research shows that such proxy risk perceptions—that is, a caregiver’s perception of their child’s likelihood of experiencing a negative consequence from an action (such as side effects from a vaccination)—can influence the caregiver’s proxy health-related decisions (such as whether or not to vaccinate their child). 6 Research also shows that caregivers of children with asthma who believe that exposure to secondhand smoke, dust, and other lung irritants can prompt breathing difficulties typically help their child avoid exposure to these “triggers.” 7,8 Finally, research shows that providing caregivers with personalized feedback about their child’s risk of obesity prompts caregivers to engage in healthier feeding practices. 9,i…”

“…Photovoice has been used successfully in child caregiving populations including caregivers of children with cancer 14 and asthma. 15,16 Caregivers have noted that time/scheduling difficulties and guilt leaving their care recipient hinder accessing psychosocial services. 17 Considering that PPCGs spend significantly more time providing care than their adult caregiver counterparts, 2 traditional therapeutic measures may be unrealistic.…”
