Micrasterias foliacea (Desmidiales, Zygnematophyceae) is an interesting desmid species as its filamentous life form is quite different from all other species within the genus. Due to the large size of the filaments and cells, accurate species identification is easy. After its original description from Rhode Island (USA) it was recorded from five continents, but no record could be found of its presence in Europe. In this paper a review of the worldwide distribution of M. foliacea (Desmidiales, Zygnematophyceae) is presented, together with notes on the species’ ecology. In addition to its currently known geographical distribution, the paper also records the species’ presence at two new locations in southern Africa, namely Botswana (Okavango River) and Mozambique (Palma, Cabo Delgado). The paper presents a discussion of taxonomical levels of intraspecific taxa, based on morphological characteristics. It is proposed that the taxonomical status of M. foliacea Bailey ex Ralfs f. nodosa should be raised to the variety, as its nodular cell wall thickenings are unique morphological features.

We present the results of a taxonomic survey of the genus Micrasterias in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (MRS), Bahia, northeastern Brazil during 2007–2010 and 2014–2015. A total of 275 phytoplanktonic and periphytic samples from 11 municipalities were analyzed. The samples were collected using a plankton net with 20 µm mesh or squeezed from macrophytes. Twenty-nine taxa were identified, which 20 have their geographic distributions expanded. Only M. pinnatifida was considered frequent, occurring in 9 municipalities, while we classified 21 species as rare in the study area. Our results emphasize the importance of the conservation of aquatic bodies in the MRS for the maintenance of biological diversity of desmids and other aquatic organisms.

In the present paper morpho-taxonomic descriptions along with the illustrations of three infraspecific taxa of genus Micrasterias C. Ag. ex Ralfs, analysis of ecological parameters and correlation coefficients between nine limnological parameters as well as the relative abundances of the genus had been described. These three taxa are Micrasterias pinnatifida var. pinnatifida fa. pinnatifida (Kütz.) Ralfs, Micrasterias tropica Nordstedt var. crassa West & West and Micrasterias foliacea var. foliacea Bailey ex Ralfs belonging to the order Zygnematales under the class Chlorophyceae. All these taxa were distributed in ponds (inland water bodies) in Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. The results of analysis of physico-chemical parameters of the ponds water revealed that lower temperature and nutrient status in respect of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N): phosphate (PO43-): potassium (K); higher dissolved oxygen (DO) values and, slight alkaline water prompted their occurrences, growth and diversity. The above said infraspecific taxa are new taxonomic reports from West Bengal, India. The taxonomic study explored the present biodiversity of this genus while the ecological study showed a clear picture of ecological conditions and water quality of the studied water bodies.INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTVolume-5, Issue-2, March-May 2016 Pages 36-47
