A previously established micromechanical model whose capability to analyze and predict the behavior of thermoinelastic fibrous composites with one-way thermomechanical coupling, in which the temperature is prescribed in advance, was verified. This model is extended herein to incorporate two-way thermomechanical coupling effects in thermoinelastic composites. As a result of this generalization, the temperature which is coupled to the mechanical effects, is governed by the energy equation and is induced into the composite's constituents as a result of the application of mechanical loadings. The model is applied to predict the behavior of composites that consist of shape memory alloy fibers embedded in metallic and polymeric matrices. Results exhibit the response of the composites to various types of loading, and the effect of the two-way thermomechanical coupling that induces temperature deviations from reference temperatures at which shape memory and pseudoelasticity effects take place at the fibers.

SUMMARYThe present work deals with the analysis of smart laminates, obtained as stacking sequence of fibrereinforced composite laminae and composite shape memory alloy (SMA) layers. The behaviour of composite SMA (CSMA) laminate is studied developing a full micro-macro approach. In fact, a non-linear 4-node mixed interpolation of tensorial components (MITC4) laminate finite element, based on the firstorder shear deformation theory, is developed. The SMA layer constitutive relationship is determined solving a non-linear homogenization problem at each non-linear iteration of each time step for each integration Gauss point. Some numerical applications are developed in order to investigate the influence of the CSMA on the buckling behaviour of plates and on the transversal displacement control of plates subjected to different loading conditions.

In the current manuscript, a homogenization framework is proposed for periodic composites with shape memory alloy (SMA) constituents under quasi-static thermomechanical conditions. The methodology is based on the step-by-step periodic homogenization, in which the macroscopic and the microscopic problems of the composite are solved simultaneously. The implementation of the framework is examined with numerical examples on SMA composite laminates. Complexity of the composite nonlinear response and non-proportional stress state in the SMA appears, even in the case of uniaxial macroscopic boundary conditions. Moreover, under certain conditions, the composite laminate can exhibit a non-convex transformation surface. Additionally, the transformation temperatures at various stress levels under isobaric thermal cycling can be quite different between the composite and the pure SMA.
