Micro-Raman imaging of Te precipitates in CdZnTe (Zn∼4%) crystals

Abstract: Micro-Raman imaging of the distribution of Te precipitates in CdZnTe crystals in different phases is reported. For the normal phase of Te precipitates, the Raman modes appear centered around 121(A1), 141(E)/TO(CdTe) cm−1 and a weak mode around 92(E) cm−1 in CdZnTe indicating the presence of trigonal lattice of Te. Under high pressure phase, the volume of Te precipitates collapses, giving more bond energy resulting in the blueshift of the corresponding Raman bands. Also, the spatial distribution of the area rat… Show more

“…It may be mentioned that the scattering cross section of Te is about two orders of magnitude larger than CdTe, 48 which results in the high intense Te peak. Similar observations are made by Bai et al 48 for the close spaced sublimated CdTe thin films and Kulkarni et al 47 in Zn doped single crystals of CdTe. They have observed the TO phonon mode of vibration, LO phonon mode of vibration and the existence of tellurium peak at 141 cm À1 and 121 cm À1 , respectively.…”

“…% Cu doped samples. 47 Apart from this, the contribution from CdTe is observed in the form of peak at 163 cm À1 due to longitudinal optic (LO) phonon mode of vibration. The broad nature of this peak (observed at 163 cm À1 ) indicates the amorphous nature of films.…”

“…The Raman spectrum measured from point 1 on the nondamaged surface shows strong peaks of the Te(A) and Te(E TO ) phonons at 123 and 142 cm −1 respectivetly [18,19] while CdTe(LO) mode appears only as a shoulder of Te(E TO ) peak at around 167 cm −1 . It should be noted that such low intensity of CdTe(LO) mode relatively to the Te phonons is typical for CdZnTe Raman spectra [18,20]. The Raman spectrum obtained from the damaged surface (point 2) also reveals strong Te modes, but along with this, the intensive CdTe (LO) mode at 166.5 cm −1 was found.…”

“…The micro-Raman spectroscopy is widely used for the analysis of CdZnTe phase composition [15][16][17]. In particular, this method allows to study distribution of Te inclusions [18][19][20] on a surface. In our study, Raman spectra were measured at room temperature by the Renishaw InVia micro-Raman spectrometer in a backscattering geometry using 1800 mm −1 grating for the Ar (514 nm) laser excitation source.…”

“…Indeed, the correlation of Te-rich SP particles and their corresponding crystalline structure observed in CdTe/CZT crystals, together with the influence of Te-rich SP particles on the optical and electrical behaviors of CdTe/CZT crystals, have also been discussed according to the statistical measurements [9][10][11][12][13]. It is clear that a more detailed interpretation of the generation of Te-rich SP particles is still required to understand the inherent relationships mentioned above, and also to further improve the crystal growth techniques.…”
