Microalgal-Bacterial Consortia: An Alluring and Novel Approach for Domestic Wastewater Treatment

Abstract: The algal-bacterial process has received more attention in the present scenario as a new low-cost method towards pollutant removal from wastewater because symbiotic relationship between algae and bacteria is efficient when compared to traditional secondary treatments. The present work evaluated the optimum concentration of microalgal-bacterial consortia for significant reductions in physicochemical parameters of raw domestic wastewater. In the study, three different concentrations (20%, 30% and 40%) of microal… Show more

“…For instance, Najafi Chaleshtari et al reported removal efficiencies of ammonium and phosphate of 94.36 + 3.5% and 88.37 + 3%, respectively, using a microalgal activated sludge membrane bioreactor cultivated in raw wastewater (Najafi et al, 2022). Similarly, Moondra et al achieved removal efficiencies of 97.40% for phosphate, 94.05% for ammonia, and 88.40% for COD with raw domestic wastewater under 8-and 16-h HRTs (Moondra et al, 2021).…”

“…The increase in pH and DO was highly influential in the removal of nutrients, organic, and metals from DWW. The growth of microalgae increases the DO content of the growth medium (Moondra et al, 2021a(Moondra et al, , 2020.…”

“…Wastewater can contain chemical pollutants such as heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and biomarkers (Wong 2017 ; Ge et al 2019 ; Moondra et al 2020 ; Guan et al 2021 ; Chen et al 2022 ; Campos-Mañas et al 2022 ). WBE was used at first in 2008 to study the consumption of illicit drugs in the three Italian cities (Zuccato et al 2008 ), and subsequently to the consumption of alcohol (Reid et al 2011 ; Rodríguez-Álvarez et al 2015 ; Boogaerts et al 2016 ; Daglioglu et al 2020 ), tobacco (Castiglioni et al 2015 ), caffeine (Senta et al 2015 ), and selected pharmaceuticals (Hernández et al 2014 ).…”
