Microbial Contaminants in the Commercial Aviation Fuel Obtained from Benin City Airport, Nigeria

Abstract: The primary function of aviation fuel is to provide propulsive energy to the aircraft. Microorganisms may contribute to aging instability in the fuel, induce corrosion of the storage tanks and pipeworks, form mats which can block filters and pipelines and increase wear in fuel pumps eventually leading to engine failure, therefore, in this study, the microbial contaminants in the commercial aviation fuel obtained from Benin City Airport, Nigeria were isolated, characterized, identified and their hydrocarbon-uti… Show more

“…The morphological and biochemical characteristics of the isolates were determined. Gram staining, indole, coagulase, voges proskaeur, methyl red, citrate utilization, catalase, spore, carbohydrate fermentation and oxidase tests were performed as carried out by Onuorah et al [14]. The isolates were identified as described by Holt et al [15].…”

“…The bacterial isolates were characterized morphologically and biochemically. Gram staining, catalase, spore, methyl red, voges proskaeur, citrate utilization, oxidase, indole, nitrate reduction, motility and sugar (sucrose, glucose, fructose, and galactose) fermentation tests were carried out as done by Onuorah et al [6]. They were identified as described by Holt et al [7].…”

“…Colony morphology, Cellular morphology, Lactophenol cotton blue staining, Germ tube test, Slide culture, Gram staining, Sugar assimilation, urease, motility and Chlamydospore formation tests were carried out as done by Onuorah et al [9] to characterize the fungi. They were identified according to the description of David et al [10].…”
