Microbial metabolism of quorum-sensing molecules acyl-homoserine lactones, γ-heptalactone and other lactones

Abstract: The cell-to-cell communication of microorganisms is known to be via exertion of certain chemical compounds (signal molecules) and is referred to as quorum sensing (QS). QS phenomenon is widespread in microbial communities. Several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi use lactone-containing compounds (e.g. acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), γ-heptalactone, butyrolactone-I) as signalling molecules. The ability of microorganisms to metabolise these compounds and the mechanisms they employ for this pur… Show more

“…During a niche competition, bacteria present different strategies, one of which is the ability to interfere in the communication process of the other bacteria, system called quorum quenching (QQ) (Bassler, 2002). The bacterial communication, known as quorum sensing (QS), is used for many microorganisms to regulate the gene expression of them and enhance survival of the microorganism (Safari et al, 2014). In this work, we demonstrated by plates assays that Bacillus sp.…”

QS phenomenon is widespread in microbial communities (Safari et al, 2014). It is known that bacteria utilize a quorum sensing system to coordinate gene expression by monitoring the concentration of molecules known as AI (Shao et al, 2012).…”
