Microbial plankton configuration in the epipelagic realm from the Beagle Channel to the Burdwood Bank, a Marine Protected Area in Sub-Antarctic waters

Abstract: Marine microbial plankton hold high structural and functional diversity, however, highresolution data are lacking in a large part of the Global Ocean, such as in subpolar areas of the SW Atlantic. The Burdwood Bank (BB) is a submerged plateau (average depth 100 m) that constitutes the westernmost segment of the North Scotia Ridge (54˚-55˚S; 56˚-62˚W). The BB hosts rich benthic biodiversity in low chlorophyll waters of the southern Patagonian Shelf, Argentina, declared Namuncura ´Marine Protected Area (NMPA) in… Show more

“…This diatom possesses large frustules and forms dense macro‐aggregates, which may have hindered consumption and the encounter of sprat with other prey items, or even harm or clog their gills (Hallegraeff, 1993). It is still unclear whether these blooms periodically occur at the MPAN/BB, and also whether there is any effect of summer blooms in TDF (Guinder et al, 2020). It is necessary to acquire more samples of preflexion larvae along with phytoplankton samples in order to assess this potential bottom‐up control and its effect on the nutritional condition of Fuegian sprats’ early stages.…”

“…This area is hydrologically complex since the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic waters converge and interconnect with the Cape Horn Current that enters the continental shelf through the Le Maire Strait in the eastern part of Tierra del Fuego, and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (Guerrero et al 1999). The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is highly loaded with nutrients that enter the Argentine shelf and is diluted in part by the freshwater inputs from glacier melting through the Beagle Channel (Guinder et al 2020). The central urban city in this area is Ushuaia that is the southernmost city of the world with ~ 60,000 inhabitants.…”
