Microbiological Analysis of Urine Cultures in Women after Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery

Abstract: Background/Aims: The rate of urinary tract infection (UTI) after pelvic reconstructive surgery ranges from 9 to 48% and the most common uropathogen is Escherichia coli (E. coli). The aim of the study is to identify the predominant uro-pathogen from urine cultures in women undergoing pelvic reconstructive surgery. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on women who underwent pelvic reconstructive surgery at a tertiary care center from July 2013 to June 2015. Data was collected from each postoperative vis… Show more

“…In this study, the overall prevalence of significant bacteriuria among admitted gynecological cases was found to be 25.4%, which was in agreement with the findings of the previous studies conducted in India 24% 21 , Nigeria, 26.2% 22 and USA 22.4% 23 . However, our finding was higher than other studies reported from Norway, 16.3% 24 and USA, 11.3% 25 . But, our finding was lower than the reports from Ethiopia, 58.1% 26 and Nigeria, 76.1% 27 .…”

“…Our UTI rate of 6.5% falls below the lower end of the reported range of 7% to 34% in previously published studies 6–14 . It is also lower than the 19% rate reported in the cranberry intervention arm seen in the study by Foxman et al, 17 most likely due to our use of several bundle strategies in combination.…”

“…For example, preoperative UTI is a strong predictor for postoperative UTI in patients undergoing stress urinary incontinence surgery 7 . Postoperative urethral catheterization is also a proven UTI risk factor in the context of surgery for other pelvic floor disorders such as pelvic organ prolapse 8,10,12,14 . In a previous study, our culture‐proven postoperative UTI rate was 17.6% among inpatients within 6 weeks of pelvic surgery 15 .…”
