Microbiological Assays and Bioautography of Maytansine and Its Homologues

Abstract: A quantitative microbiological assay and a bioautography system with Penicillium avellaneum UC-4376 was developed for the antitumor drugs maytansine, and its homologues, maytanprine and maytanbutine. The susceptibility of the assay is 1.5 μg/ml.

“…The strains used were Staphylococcus aureus (CBAM-026), Bacillus cereus (CBAM-289), Enterococcus faecalis (CBAM-309) Pseudomonas aeuriginosa (CBAM-024) and the fungal strains of Candida albicans (CFAM-1132) and Penicillium avellaneum. The fungus P. avellaneum is an species which has been used by many researchers as a target of anticancer and antifungal compounds ( Floss et al , 2004 ; Hanka and Barnett 1974 ; Kittakoop et al , 2009 ).…”

“…Meanwhile, Yao Xinsheng also selected some antitumor ingredients from a large number of herbal medicines with this model [ 66 ]. LJ Hanka et al developed a quantitative microbiological assay and a bioautography system with Penicillium avellaneum UC-4376 for the antitumor drug maytansine and its homologues maytanprine and maytanbutine [ 67 ]. However, this method uses micro-dilution over separation, tracking and selecting; therefore, investigators cannot determine whether there are active antitumor components in crude extract samples in one step [ 68 ].…”
