Microbiological contamination of cosmetic products – observations from Europe, 2005–2018

Abstract: Background Although cosmetic products are not expected to be fully aseptic, their potential microbiological contamination might be dangerous, especially for immunocompromised patients. The extent of such contamination of cosmetics in Europe is poorly studied. Objectives The objective of this study was to explore whether microbiologically contaminated cosmetic products are available for sale in Europe and what type of contamination was reported. Methods We searched the European Union Rapid Information System fo… Show more

“…In addition, more vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, children below three years of age, and immunocompromised individuals, are particularly susceptible to the effects of adulterated cannabinoid-based products [22]. Finally, products marketed as suitable for application near the eyes are a particular issue due to the fragility of periocular skin [23].…”

“…From the time of purchase on, the user has the responsibility to store the product in suitable conditions in order to prevent contamination (Cornélio and Almeida, 2020). This knowledge is important for the dermatologist who treats patients suffering from dermatological infections of unknown origin (Michalek and John, 2019).…”

“…The microbiological purity test is a basic step which plays an essential role in assessing the quality of each product type; it is therefore frequently utilized, for example, as part of the product stability testing process. Although cosmetic products are not expected to be fully aseptic, the presence of any microorganisms should be established, as well as their number [47]. Furthermore, the microbiological purity of each batch of product should be established before it is launched onto the market [48].…”
