Microbiota and Metabolite Profiling as Markers of Mood Disorders: A Cross-Sectional Study in Obese Patients

Abstract: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of several neurological and psychiatric diseases, but few studies report the contribution of biological features in the occurrence of mood disorders in obese patients. The aim of the study is to evaluate the potential links between serum metabolomics and gut microbiome, and mood disturbances in a cohort of obese patients. Psychological, biological characteristics and nutritional habits were evaluated in 94 obese subjects from the Food4Gut study stratified according … Show more

“…Furthermore, we have shown that the abundance of Sutterella , a genus from Proteobacteria , is extremely low in CD patients. Sutterella has been described to decrease in individuals with depression as well as in obese patients with mood disorders ( 38 , 39 ). To elucidate if the gut-brain axis is impaired in CD patients and could contribute to the well-known persistence of neuropsychiatric morbidity in them should represent an important goal of future research ( 40 ).…”

“…Affectivity was assessed using the PANAS questionnaire, which is sensitive to changes over time, and is intended to measure mood through positive and negative affectivity. The PANAS is validated in French and has been used in pregnant women [ 21 – 24 ].…”

“… 812 Changes in the levels of several amino acid derived metabolites in a cohort of obese patients, such as the decrease of phenylacetylglutamine and the increase of L-histidine, linked to changes in the gut microbiota composition and function. 813 Particularly, P. pentosaceus and L. lactis can ameliorate NAFLD progression by regulating tryptophan metabolism of the gut-liver axis and also closed associated with metabolic dysregulations of bile acid and indole. 814 A study analyzed the correlation between serum metabolites and gut microbiota in elderly patients with chronic heart failure insights into metabolic phenotypes.…”
