A novel chirped metal structure (CMS) is developed for polarimetric enhanced detection of both mid-wave (MW) (3-5 µm) and long-wave (LW) infrared (IR) wavelength bands (8-14 µm). The nano-scale structure consists of parallel sub-wavelength chirped-width stripes together with graded-width separating gaps. The CMS allows plasmonically enhanced polarisation-sensitive absorption of dual-bands simultaneously in underneath IR detection device. The finite-difference-time-domain method is utilised to numerically evaluate gold CMS structure on an IR detector. Simulations show an excellent performance with high plasmonic absorption enhancement and polarisation extinction-ratio over the continuous wavelength range 3-14 µm. The maximum recorded extinction-ratios are 2900:1 and 400:1 in the LW and MW bands, respectively. The maximum estimated plasmonic absorption enhancements for TM-polarisation in the LW and MW bands are 96 and 16%, respectively. The suppression of TE-polarisation absorption is almost 100% over both bands.

We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of an infrared (IR) polarization sensing detector with a wide dynamic range and sub-wavelength dimensions. The detector consists of two orthogonal slot antennas, each loaded with two microbolometers at its edges. The polarization of the incoming IR radiation is detected by comparing the received power levels in the bolometer pairs corresponding to each slot antenna. The IR radiation is sensed by applying a dc bias voltage to each antenna and measuring the changes in the dc current caused by the change of the bolometer resistance as they absorb the incoming IR radiation. In this design, the ratio of the absorbed power in the bolometers is a one to one function of the polarization of the incident wave. A prototype of this detector, designed to have maximum sensitivity at λ = 10.6 μm, was designed, fabricated, and characterized. The fabricated detector has an area of 0.7λ × 0.7λ, where λ is the free-space wavelength. The polarization sensing response is characterized under different angles of incidence. The measurement results show that the device has a dynamic range of 24 dB between two orthogonal orientations of EM wave polarization for incidence angles in the range of ±20° from boresight.

The Floquet spectrum in an anisotropic tilted Dirac semimetal modulated by linearly polarized light is addressed through the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian via the Floquet theorem. The time-dependent wave functions and the quasienergy spectrum of the two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian under the normal incidence of linearly polarized waves are obtained for an arbitrarily intense electromagnetic radiation. We applied a set of unitary transformations to reduce the Schrödinger equation to an ordinary second-order differential Hill equation with complex coefficients. Through the stability analysis of this differential equation, the weak and strong field regimes are clearly distinguished in the quasi-spectrum. In the weak electric field regime, above a certain threshold given by the field parameters, the spectrum mostly resembles that of free electrons in graphene. Below this threshold, in the strong electric field regime, the spectrum abruptly becomes highly anisotropic and a gap opens up. As an example, we apply the results to the particular case of borophene.
