Microcrystallinity and colloidal peculiarities of UF/isocyanate hybrid resins

Abstract: Combined mixtures of polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanates (pMDI) with Urea-formaldehyderesins (UF) adhesives for wood panels are shown (a) by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) of the cured adhesive to present a certain percentage of microcrystallinity, this being due exclusively to the proportion of urea-formaldehyde resin present in the mix and, (b) by polarized light optical microscopy (PLOM) to present colloidal structures in which oligomers and colloidal structures of one resin have migrated within the c… Show more

“…It was based on the stability of PMDI in water for about 5 h before being water-deactivated. Variations of the theme, such as the use of water emulsifiable blocked PMDI [163][164][165] and, more recently, of microencapsulated pMDI [166] have also been tried. They both worked and were attempted to see if an improvement on the original, simpler, system could be achieved.…”

“…Starch adhesives were modified by isocyanate as cross-linker [43] [52] for wood composite can be prepared with isocyante as crosslinker, influence factors on the bonding strength and water resistance of starch adhesive were studied by different solid content, adding isocyanate and additives like PVA, Acrylic emulsion. Bonding strength and water resistance were improved significantly by adding additives and isocyanates to starch.…”

“…In this study, besides using UF resin, a mixture of UF and isocyanate is also used. This is intended to increase strength [5] and reduce thickness swelling [6] because thickness swelling is still a problem on particle boards [7]. In previous studies, much additional substrate used such as porcelain stone which was used to reduce the value of thickness swelling of composite board made of pruning wood [8].…”
