Microdebrider-Assisted Endoscopic Marsupialization for the Nasolabial Cyst: Comparisons between Sublabial and Transnasal Approaches

Abstract: Background The incidence of nasolabial cysts is very low. Simple excision through a sublabial approach is the treatment of choice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microdebrider as a tool in transnasal endoscopic marsupialization for nasolabial cysts and compare it with conventional instruments and a sublabial approach for cyst removal. Methods Retrospective chart review of 30 patients (31 cysts) with a mean age of 46.9 years received surgical treatments for nasolabial cysts. We performed three type… Show more

“…3,4 Excision via sublabial incision is the classic surgical treatment of NC. 1,3,5,6,9 Marsupialization, injection of sclerotic agents, cauterization, aspiration, and incision and drainage are the other surgical modalities. 1 Sublabial excision has some advantages, such as good exposure of area and total excision of the NC, but on the other hand, it requires general anesthesia and causes larger soft-tissue trauma.…”

“…After sublabial excision, there could be some complications such as facial swelling, pain, hematoma, oronasal fistulae, infection, and numbness of gingiva and teeth. 2,3,5 As the basal mucosa of the nose is very thin, it is difficult to protect this area during sublabial excision. During dissection from the nasal floor, extra care should be given to avoid rupture.…”

“…Alternative methods of treatment have been suggested, including aspiration, cauterization, injection of sclerosing agents, and incision with drainage. However, these methods are associated with higher rates of relapse [3, 11, 12, 15]. Therefore, in view of the ease of surgical resection and its curative potential, we believe this procedure should be the treatment of choice in most cases.…”
