Microfungi Associated with Pteroptyx bearni (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) Eggs and Larvae from Kawang River, Sabah (Northern Borneo)

Abstract: Overlooking the importance of insect disease can have disastrous effects on insect conservation. This study reported the microfungi that infect Pteroptyx bearni eggs and larvae during ex-situ rearing project. Two different species of microfungi that infected the firefly’s immature life stages were isolated and identified. Penicillium citrinum infected the firefly’s eggs while Trichoderma harzianum infected the firefly during the larval stage. Both microfungi species caused absolute mortality once infection was… Show more

“…The P. citrinum culture filtrate contains secondary metabolites and is toxic to insects, for example, patulin which can kill Culex quinquefasciatus larvae up to 100% (Maketon et al 2014). P. citrinum is reported to be effective in killing insect pests (Foo et al 2017;Maketon et al 2014) and mite pests (Mazid et al 2016).…”

“…To account for variation in the energetic resources (e.g., fat stores) available to hosts that could influence survival, we assessed each firefly for condition individually under CO 2 anaesthesia on a Flystuff Flypad (Genesee Scientific; El Cajon, CA). Briefly, to calculate condition, we measured elytron length, a measure of adult body size that reflects the resources acquired as a larva and that is not expected to change over adult lifetime (den Nijs et al, 1996;Lagisz, 2008; Supporting Information File 1-Sections I, V.S1), using a digital calliper (mm;VWR cat. 12777-830).…”

“…Larvae live on or in the soil, where they likely encounter a diverse microbial community in the substrate as well as through their earthworm prey, including bacteria in the genera Serratia and Pseudomonas (Green et al, 2021). Larvae are also susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections that impede lab culture (Fallon et al, 2018; Foo et al, 2017; McLean et al, 1972). In contrast to the larval stage, adult Photinus may only live a few weeks, with limited evidence for nutritional intake (Williams, 1917; Lloyd, 1997; but see Faust & Faust, 2014).…”

“…These include entomopathogenic fungi (cf. Day, 2011;Foo, Seelan & Dawood, 2017), nematodes, and parasitoid tachinid and phorid flies (Lloyd, 1973;Faust, 2017). Interestingly, but consistent with their mostly diurnal behavior, parasitic wasps were never reported to parasitize firefly larvae.…”
