Ultrasonic velocity and density data of binary systems of water-2-butoxyethanol (BE), 2-butoxyethanol-benzene, and 2-butoxyethanol-decane are reported for temperatures of 25, 40, and 55°C. Adiabatic compressibility coefficients, apparent molar volumes, and apparent molar compressibilities were calculated from these data. Excess adiabatic compressibility properties were evaluated using volume fraction weighting of the individual component properties to estimate ideal mixture behavior. These results are compared with the data obtained based on the use of mole fraction weighting of the individual component properties for the ideal behavior value. A sharp ultrasonic velocity maximum and compressibility minimum is observed at low BE concentration in mixtures of water-BE at all temperatures. These maxima in ultrasonic velocity and minima in adiabatic compressibility are attributed to the formation of "clathrate-like" structures of water and alcohol. A shift of the velocity maximum towards lower concentrations of BE was observed with increase of temperature. A minimum in the ultrasonic velocity and a maximum in adiabatic compressibility coefficient values are observed in systems of BE-benzene and BE-decane. These results are discussed in terms of the breakdown of associated alcohol structures and the interstitial location of hydrocarbon molecules in alcohol aggregates. N. P. RAO et RONALD E. VERRALL. A toutes les temperatures, on observe un maximum important de la vitesse ultrasonique et une compressibilitC minimale a des faibles concentrations de BE dans les mClanges eau/BE. On attribue ces maxima dans la vitesse ultrasonique et ces minima dans la compressibilitC adiabatique a la fom~ation de structures de l'eau et de llCthanol "ressernblant a des chlathrates". Lorsqu'on augmente la tempCrature, on observe un dCplacement du maximum de la vitesse vers les concentrations plus basses de BE. For oil sand extractions with microemulsions it is important to disperse large quantities of light hydrocarbons in an aqueous medium. Fundamental studies on the properties of 2‐butoxyethanol (BE) and diethylmethylamine (Et2McN) in water suggest that these two liquids could be more effective cosurfactants than the usual alcohols used for this purpose. The phase diagrams of microemulsions using BE and Et2MeN as cosurfactants, combined with typical ionic and non‐ionic surfactants and typical aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, were therefore investigated and compared with microemulsions based on n‐butanol. Although the phase diagrams depend significantly on the nature of the surfactant and of the oil, the monophasic region generally increases with the cosurfactant in the order n‐butanol < Et2McN < BE. With the active mixture BE‐cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, temperature has little effect on the phase diagram and NaCl generally destabilizes the microemulsion.
