Microheterogeneity of Luteinizing Hormone in Pituitary Glands From Women of Pre‐ and Postmenopausal Age

Abstract: Luteinizing hormone from the pituitaries of women of premenopausal (Pre-M) and postmenopausal (Post-M) age has been studied to further understand the variations in the quality of plasma LH in women of different ages. The median and range for bioactive LH was 101: 85-155 IU/mg protein and 83: 52-201 IU/mg protein for the Pre- and Post-M groups respectively. The ratios of LH bioactivity/immunoreactivity (B:I) were 1.04 +/- 0.13 (Pre-M) and 0.97 +/- 0.02 (Post-M). Broad range isoelectrophoretic profiles of the pi… Show more

“…The biological quality of gonadotropins, as related to isohormone profile, is influenced by a variety of physiological conditions. The qualitative properties of secreted and/or intra-pituitary gonadotropins are influenced by GnRH [Dufau et al, 1976;Resko et al, 19821, sex steroids [Peckham & Knobil, 1976a;Marut et al, 1981;Chappel et al, 19841, gonadectomy [Peckham & Knobil, 1976a,bl, stage of sexual development [Reader et al, 1983;Stroll0 et al, 1981;Wide & Hobson, 19831, and phase of the reproductive cycle [Adams et al, 1987;Cameron & Chappel, 1985;Robertson et al, 19791. It is expected, therefore, that the properties of excreted gonadotropins also will be influenced by individual differences in endocrine status.…”

“…This glycoprotein in man is synthesized and secreted in several distinct forms each with different biological activity (29,30). This heterogeneity is not caused by changes in the amino acid sequence of the a or ß chains but to variations in the nature of the carbohydrate moieties of the hormone (31).…”

“…The defect in LH has been referred to as a quantitative abnormality, such as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism [2] and polycystic ovary syndrome [3]. Recently, an abnormality in the quality of LH has been proposed by several investigators [4][5][6], but the exact pathogenesis has not been clarified.…”
