Microneedle, bio-microneedle and bio-inspired microneedle: A review

Abstract: Microneedles (MNs) are micro-scale needles used for drug delivery and other targets. Micro-scale size endows them with many advantages over hypodermic needles, including painlessness, minimal invasiveness and convenient operation, but it may also lead to risk of mechanical failures, which should be prevented in the clinical applications of MNs. The objective of this review is mainly to introduce studies on the mechanics problems with respect to MNs. Firstly, the basic knowledge of MNs is introduced in brief, s… Show more

“…In this context, this means the majority of nanostructures we review here are less than 10 µm high, with sub‐micron tips (with a few exceptions), see Figure . We do not consider micropatches (also referred to as microneedles) in this review, which can share similar aspect ratios, but have heights an order of magnitude larger …”

“…Oka et al developed one of the first mimics inspired by mosquito mouthparts (proboscis), [482] and they have been followed by designs based on caterpillar spines [483] and others. [484] Research in the microneedle field continues to grow, and the multitude of skinpiercing organs in insects have a wealth of insight to offer in this effort.…”

“…This is what happened to the micro-and nanotechnologies that have revolutionized consumer electronics and telecommunications. [10,11] In these papers, the MNs are classified on the basis of their material (silicon, metal, glass, ceramic, polymer), shape (pyramidal, conical, solid, hollow, coated), bio-features (dissolvable, degradable, biocompatible, bioresponsive), and finally fabrication process (multistep, single step). [4] The convergence of such different fields of knowledge has generated a multitude of similar devices grouped under the single name of microneedles, which can be very different in terms of the materials used, fabrication procedures, and features exploited.…”
