Microneedling: A Review and Practical Guide

Abstract: Microneedling is a safe, minimally invasive, and effective esthetic treatment for several different dermatologic conditions including acne and other scars, rhytides, and striae. Given its expedient post-treatment recovery, limited side effect profile, and significant clinical results, microneedling is a valuable alternative to more invasive procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and deep chemical peeling.

“…Prior to MN collagen-induction therapy, patients should use a cleanser to remove any makeup or debris prior to application of any topical aesthetic cream/gel to treatment area (Alster and Graham 2018). Alster and Graham (2018) typically apply a compounded 30% lidocaine cream for 20-30 min before removal with water-soaked gauze and alcohol prep immediately before therapy. In the healthy patient without contraindication to treatment, typical post-procedural expectations in collagen induction therapy with MNs include: pinpoint bleeding, bruising, erythema, and irritation (Fernandes 2005).…”

“…Multiple technologies including laser, high-intensity focused ultrasound, and radiofrequency (RF) have been developed in an attempt to meet this rising demand. 1 8 RF technology has steadily gained popularity since the early 2000s, with consecutive increases annually of 10% or more. 9 , 10 These gains encompass aesthetic surgery and numerous nonaesthetic applications (tissue electrodissection, cardiac catheter ablation, ophthalmic surgery, etc).…”

“…Multiple sessions with MN are generally required to get desired results. A 50% to 70% improvement in acne scars was reported as a result of 3-5 sessions of MN at 2-to 4-week intervals (Alster & Graham, 2018). Four sessions of i-PRF and MN + i-PRF were performed at 10-day intervals in this present study; considering the current MN literature, total collagen production during the wound-healing process peaked within 7-14 days (Hakkinen, Larjava, & Koivisto, 2012); in addition, the PRF resorption time was 7-11 days, and growth factor release from i-PRF occurred at 10 days .…”
